Leaves are GIFTS not GARBAGE
The urge to tidy may be strong but it’s important to remember, where possible, to #leavetheleaves …
They provide vital food and shelter for butterflies, beetles, bees, moths and more
They insulate soil, protecting the roots of trees from the winter’s cold and other damage
Leaves act as a natural fertiliser once they break down
It’s a normal phase of the changing seasons, one of the great wonders of nature
By all means, clear them away from paths/patios to avoid slip hazards but at least leave some of the leaves in the back of your beds OR collect them and let them rot down.
When dead leaves are sent to landfill to decompose in the presence of non-organic materials, methane is released in large quantities. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, responsible for at least a quarter of today’s global warming
